Appalachian State University, Boone, NC

Frank Hall is a residence hall at Appalachian State University that was originally built in 1979. Extensive renovations were proposed as part of a larger dormitory revitalization project taking place at ASU. Frank Hall was awarded LEED Gold Certification by the US Green Building Council and was the first building on the Appalachian State campus to receive LEED Certification.
The renovation of the six-story brick building included new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, as well as fixtures. In addition to new service systems, the renovation provided the opportunity to partially reconfigure the interior while providing new interior finishes throughout. An entrance canopy was added to the front of the building and is of existing campus vernacular.
The sustainable materials that contributed to LEED Certification included those of recycled content, re-used interior contents, and pervious concrete. Solar panels were used for domestic water and space heating.
