Christ School is a college preparatory school affiliated with the Episcopal Church that was founded by Father Thomas Wetmore in 1900. Their mission is to produce educated men of good character, prepared for both scholastic achievement in college and productive citizenship in adult society. The 111 year old campus is currently comprised of academic, athletic, spiritual, and residential facilities. The Mebane Science Center is a two-story facility now includes 12,000 square feet of new science laboratories, classrooms, and student gathering space. Important features include a “monster garage” physics laboratory, a college level chemistry lab, biology touch-tanks, a roof top observatory, an outdoor classroom and a 500 gallon saltwater aquarium in the lobby. The boys learn best by doing and what better way to teach the sciences than by way of this state-of-the-art facility.
Using a participatory design process from programming through design, this smartly designed space is the product of input from faculty, staff, and especially students in concert with the architects.
